President Droupadi Murmu yesterday presented the ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ to the Sikkim Police at a ceremonial event held in Gangtok, recognising the force’s distinguished service and contribution to maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
Addressing the gathering, the President congratulated serving and retired personnel of the Sikkim Police and praised the force for its commitment to ensuring peace, security and justice since its establishment in 1897.
Highlighting the need for reforms in policing, President Murmu said India’s police system still bears the imprint of colonial rule, where the primary objective was to control the public rather than serve them. She stressed that the colonial mindset within policing must be completely discarded to empower citizens and achieve the vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.
The President emphasised that transparency and accountability are essential pillars of modern policing. She called for a more citizen-friendly police system where people can register grievances without fear and urged police personnel to adopt a sensitive approach towards women, children and vulnerable sections of society.
She said the role of the police should go beyond merely apprehending criminals and focus on building a secure, socially aware and law-abiding society. Describing the police as partners and guides for citizens, she noted that stronger public trust in law enforcement would enhance both social security and respect for the rule of law.
President Murmu also commended the Sikkim Police for its professional conduct and cordial relationship with the public, noting that the force has earned the affection and respect of the people of Sikkim through its dedicated service.
