Nation Observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

The nation is observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day today, paying tribute to the millions of people who lost their lives, were displaced from their homes and endured immense suffering during the Partition of India in 1947.

Various programmes are being organised across the country, including in the National Capital, to remember those who suffered during one of the most tragic chapters in the country’s history.

The Government decided in 2021 to observe August 14 every year as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The day is intended to honour the victims of Partition and ensure that future generations remember the pain, suffering and sacrifices endured by millions of people.

The Partition, which accompanied India’s independence in 1947, triggered widespread communal violence and one of the largest mass migrations in human history. Around 20 million people were affected as families were forced to leave their homes and relocate across the newly created borders.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day also serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of social division and communal disharmony. The observance seeks to strengthen the spirit of unity, social harmony and human dignity.

As the country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the nation remembers and pays homage to those who lost their lives and suffered during the violence of Partition, while reaffirming the importance of peace, unity and harmony.
