The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued 10 fishermen stranded off the coast of Puri, Odisha, in a swift Search and Rescue (SAR) operation carried out under challenging weather conditions, reaffirming its commitment to maritime safety.
The rescue operation was launched after the Coast Guard received information from the Odisha Police Coastal Security Headquarters that the fishing boat IND-AP-V5-MM-872, carrying 10 crew members, had become stranded due to rough seas.
Acting promptly, the Coast Guard directed a nearby fishing vessel, IFB Simhadri Apna (IND-AP-V5-MM-378), to rescue the stranded fishermen. After safely taking all 10 fishermen onboard, the vessel was carrying a total of 20 persons but soon sought assistance as deteriorating weather made navigation increasingly difficult.
Responding immediately, an Indian Coast Guard Interceptor Boat established contact with the fishing vessel and escorted it safely to Paradip Harbour despite severe sea conditions, including wind speeds of up to 40 knots and wave heights ranging between 2.5 and 3 metres.
The Coast Guard District Headquarters (Odisha) coordinated closely with the Paradip Port Authority to ensure smooth berthing and provide all necessary assistance to the distressed vessel upon arrival at the harbour.
The successful operation underscored the Indian Coast Guard’s operational readiness and seamless coordination with the Odisha Police, port authorities, and the local fishing community in safeguarding lives at sea.
The Indian Coast Guard reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of fishermen and all mariners through prompt and effective Search and Rescue operations, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
