India has called for safe and unimpeded navigation and the free flow of commerce through international waterways, while according high priority to the safety and security of Indian vessels and seafarers.
Briefing the media in New Delhi yesterday, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Indian Missions across the Gulf region are in constant contact with the Ministry of Shipping and maritime authorities in the respective countries. He said 24/7 helplines are being operated to provide support to anyone who may need assistance. These helplines have been functioning for the past several months.
New Delhi has also called upon all parties to refrain from targeting civilian infrastructure, civilian vessels and seafarers.
Responding to a question about a US lawmaker’s objections to the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, Mr. Jaiswal said India has rejected the objections, stating that legislative matters are the country’s internal affairs and decisions are taken by Parliament. He also pointed out that several countries, including the US, regulate the flow of foreign funds.
Replying to a question regarding former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s press conference, Mr. Jaiswal reiterated that India had no role to play.
On last night’s telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the MEA spokesperson said both leaders discussed the ongoing situation and developments in West Asia. He added that the call was made from the Israeli side and noted that India has a Special Strategic Partnership with Israel. During the conversation, the two leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation across various sectors.
On the defence pact between Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, the spokesperson said India is closely following the development. Regarding the recent defence pact between Pakistan and Somalia, Mr. Jaiswal said India continues to follow these developments closely.
The spokesperson also said India is looking forward to organising the India-Africa Forum Summit. He added that both sides are in touch with each other to decide on a convenient date for the summit.
