Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah today reviewed a range of indigenous surveillance and border management technologies at the Border Security Force’s (BSF) Jhumagachh Border Outpost (BOP) in Siliguri, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to strengthening India’s border security through advanced technological solutions.
During the visit, the Home Minister inspected multiple smart border systems designed to enhance surveillance, improve intrusion detection and support border troops operating along the India-Bangladesh frontier.
Among the technologies showcased was a radio-based fence breach detection system, which immediately alerts security personnel by broadcasting a pre-recorded warning message whenever the border fence is tampered with. Shah also reviewed an infrared alarm system deployed in vulnerable areas such as riverine stretches and unfenced gaps, where interruption of infrared beams provides real-time intrusion alerts to troops.
The Home Minister further inspected a gate management system developed to facilitate secure and regulated movement of civilians and farmers living along the international border while maintaining operational security.
As part of the visit, Shah virtually laid the foundation stone for BSF infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹77 crore. These include three BSF development projects valued at ₹47 crore and the construction of a four-kilometre border fence, estimated at ₹30 crore, on newly acquired land for two Border Outposts in West Bengal.
He also visited a BSF watchtower, participated in a tree plantation drive and interacted with BSF personnel during the ‘Prahari Sammelan’, where he commended the force for its role in safeguarding the nation’s borders.
Addressing BSF personnel, Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s border security architecture.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Government of India is committed to making the country’s borders impregnable.”
The Home Minister said the government is developing a quadrangular security grid based on the concept of ‘Smart Borders’ to enhance surveillance, improve response capabilities and prevent illegal infiltration along international borders.
“The Modi government is establishing a quadrangular security grid to fortify the borders.”
He emphasised that the welfare of security personnel deployed on the borders and their families remains a key priority of the government while stressing that technology-driven border management will play a central role in securing vulnerable stretches.
According to Shah, the proposed quadrangular security grid will first be implemented at the grassroots level in West Bengal before being expanded further.
He also directed that pending border infrastructure projects linked to national security be prioritised and completed at the earliest.
During his visit to Siliguri, the Home Minister chaired a high-level meeting to review border management issues in West Bengal. He also presided over a separate review meeting on the implementation of the three new criminal laws and the state’s birth and death registration system.
The visit was attended by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the Director General of the Border Security Force and other senior officials.
