Union Home Minister Amit Shah today launched the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029), outlining the government’s three-year roadmap to combat drug trafficking, reduce substance abuse, and strengthen rehabilitation efforts. The document was unveiled during the 10th Apex-Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in the national capital.

Addressing the meeting, Shah described drug abuse as a serious threat to national security, social stability, economic progress, and the future of India’s youth. He called for a united national campaign involving governments, law enforcement agencies, spiritual leaders, youth organisations, and mothers to eliminate the drug menace.

Highlighting the government’s anti-narcotics efforts, the Home Minister said authorities seized 11.8 million kilograms of synthetic drugs between 2014 and 2026, compared to 2.6 million kilograms between 2004 and 2014. He said the sharp rise in seizures reflects the government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking networks.
Shah also stressed the importance of technology-driven enforcement and inter-agency coordination. He said the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has developed several digital platforms for real-time sharing of information on drug-related crimes and urged Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police across states to upload case details within a fixed timeline. Timely data sharing, he said, would improve monitoring, facilitate better investigations, and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

The newly launched Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029) provides a comprehensive strategy focusing on demand reduction, supply reduction, and rehabilitation. It also addresses emerging challenges such as the growing threat of synthetic drugs and darknet-enabled trafficking while emphasizing public awareness, treatment, and rehabilitation services.

During the event, Shah also inaugurated a Drug Disposal Fortnight, under which more than 2,09,500 kilograms of seized narcotic substances, valued at approximately ₹6,000 crore, will be destroyed. He said the initiative would send a strong message to drug cartels and reinforce the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward narcotics trafficking.

The NCORD meeting brought together senior officials from the Centre and states to review India’s anti-drug strategy and chart the course toward the government’s vision of a drug-free India.
