Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari reviewed the quality and maintenance progress of National Highway projects spanning 1,489 km in Mizoram, 1,759 km in Manipur, and 1,578 km in Nagaland during a meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The review was conducted based on inputs received through media and social media and was attended by officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and project contractors.
During the meeting, Gadkari emphasised the importance of timely execution of highway projects, strict adherence to quality standards, and the adoption of advanced technologies to develop sustainable and efficient road infrastructure. He noted that improved road connectivity is critical for enhancing regional connectivity, facilitating economic growth, and improving commuter convenience.
The Minister directed officials to accelerate on-ground execution and strengthen quality monitoring mechanisms to ensure the durability and performance of highway assets. He also called for the adoption of modern construction practices aimed at improving riding quality, extending asset life, and ensuring seamless connectivity across key corridors in the Northeast.
A key focus of the review was preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. Gadkari instructed officials to implement comprehensive preventive measures, including effective drainage management, slope protection works, and robust quick-response mechanisms to minimise disruptions and ensure commuter safety.
The meeting also underscored the need for sustained efforts to maintain road safety and infrastructure durability during adverse weather conditions. Officials were directed to closely monitor project implementation and ensure that all prescribed quality and maintenance standards are met.
The review forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality, safety, and reliability of the National Highway network across the Northeastern states.
