In a proud moment for the Assam Rifles and the nation, eight gallant personnel of the Force were conferred prestigious gallantry awards by the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan yesterday.
Recognising exceptional courage, leadership and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave danger, the Assam Rifles was awarded one Kirti Chakra and seven Shaurya Chakras, reaffirming the Force’s enduring legacy of operational excellence and sacrifice in safeguarding national security.
Leading the honours was Major Arshdeep Singh Gill of the Lushai Hills Battalion (1 Assam Rifles), who was awarded the Kirti Chakra for displaying extraordinary valour during a high-risk counter-insurgency operation near a border fencing site. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and battlefield acumen, the officer personally neutralised five armed insurgents and played a pivotal role in the elimination of ten hostile cadres, ensuring mission success without any casualties to own troops.
From the same battalion, Subedar PH Moses was conferred the Shaurya Chakra for his conspicuous bravery and tactical ingenuity during the operation. By deliberately drawing enemy fire away from his scouts, he enabled his team to secure critical vantage positions and subsequently neutralised an armed insurgent, significantly contributing to the successful outcome of the mission.
In another remarkable act of courage, Rifleman Dhruba Jyoti Dutta of 33 Assam Rifles was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his exceptional gallantry during a militant ambush in September 2025. While returning from a flood relief mission from Imphal Valley (Imphal West District) towards Nambol (Bishnupur District), his convoy came under intense enemy fire. Despite sustaining multiple critical gunshot wounds, Rifleman Dutta displayed extraordinary presence of mind and determination by steering his damaged vehicle out of the ambush zone, thereby saving the lives of eight fellow soldiers.
The recognition accorded to these brave soldiers reflects the highest traditions of military service and stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit, professionalism and selfless commitment of the Assam Rifles. Their acts of courage under fire embody the ethos of the Force and inspire future generations of soldiers serving on the frontlines of national security.
