Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were martyred in an ambush by suspected militants along National Highway-202 near Noungshong Kong village under Ukhrul Police Station in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Monday.
According to security sources, the troops came under heavy fire while moving through the area, triggering an immediate response. Reinforcements were rushed to the site, and an exchange of fire ensued between the security forces and the suspected militants.
A search and area domination operation has since been launched to track down and neutralise the attackers. Security has been intensified in the region, and further details are awaited as the operation continues.
The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of the Northeast, where security forces remain engaged in counter-insurgency operations against armed militant groups.
Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of the Assam Rifles, along with all ranks of the force, paid solemn tribute to Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Manipur today.
Expressing deep condolences, the Director General conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and reaffirmed that the Assam Rifles stands firmly with them during this time of grief. The force honoured the courage, dedication and selfless service of the two brave soldiers, who laid down their lives in the discharge of their duty.
The Governor of Manipur has expressed deep grief over the killing of two Assam Rifles personnel in an ambush in Ukhrul district, condemning the attack as a “dastardly act of violence” and extending condolences to the bereaved families.
In a statement shared by Lok Bhavan, Manipur on X, the Governor said he was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two brave Assam Rifles personnel in an ambush in Ukhrul today.”
The Governor strongly condemned the attack, stating that such acts of violence have no place in society and cannot weaken the collective resolve to uphold peace and security.He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased personnel and prayed that they find strength and courage in this hour of grief.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the attack and expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister wrote: “Such acts of terror will not be tolerated. The Manipur Government is committed to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice and remains resolute in maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law.”
