Raksha Bandhan at Pallel Highlights Assam Rifles’ Bond with Communities in Northeast

For the troops of the Assam Rifles deployed in Manipur, Raksha Bandhan this year carried a meaning that went beyond the traditional celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters. At Pallel Garrison in Kakching district on August 27, the festival became an occasion to celebrate the enduring relationship between the force and the communities it serves in the Northeast.

The celebrations brought together 179 participants, including 135 Assam Rifles personnel, 30 students of Assam Rifles Public School, 10 local Meira Paibis and four women representatives of Mumbai-based NGO Matri Bhoomi Ke Rakshak Foundation.

In a warm gesture of solidarity, the women representatives tied Rakhis to Assam Rifles personnel, expressing their affection, respect and gratitude for the troops. For the soldiers, the gesture served as a reminder of the trust and emotional connection that has developed between the force and the people of the region over the years.

The celebrations also highlighted the role of the Assam Rifles in the Northeast, where the force has long combined its security responsibilities with efforts aimed at strengthening ties with local communities. Through community engagement, outreach initiatives and support to people in remote areas, the force has sought to build confidence and reinforce a sense of shared responsibility and national integration.

For the troops stationed away from their families, the Rakhi ceremony offered a particularly personal moment. The Rakhis tied by women from Mumbai and local Meira Paibis symbolised a bond that transcended geography, bringing a sense of home and belonging to the garrison.

The celebrations also included a ritual ceremony at the Pallel Garrison temple. Personnel participated in the prayers seeking blessings for their comrades, families and the nation, while reaffirming the values of duty, discipline, devotion and service before self.

The participation of local women and students added a strong community dimension to the occasion. It also reflected how festivals and cultural traditions can become bridges between security forces and civilians, particularly in regions where maintaining close contact with local communities remains important.

    Editor’s Pick:

The Assam Rifles’ presence in the Northeast has historically been closely associated with both security duties and engagement with local populations. Events such as the Raksha Bandhan celebrations provide a human face to that relationship, allowing soldiers and citizens to share moments of affection, gratitude and mutual respect.

As the celebrations concluded, the message from Pallel was simple but powerful: for the troops serving far from their homes, the bonds forged with the people of the Northeast can themselves become a source of strength and motivation to continue serving with dedication and commitment.
