Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from 08 to 10 September 2026, leading a high-level Indian delegation comprising senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of External Affairs.
During the visit, he will hold high-level consultations with the Sri Lankan leadership on a wide range of bilateral and regional security issues. He will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Colombo.
The visit assumes significance in the context of India and Sri Lanka’s longstanding defence and maritime security partnership, underpinned by deep civilisational, cultural and people-to-people ties. Defence cooperation between the two countries remains an important pillar of the bilateral relationship, with growing emphasis on maritime security, capacity building, training and enhanced coordination in the Indian Ocean Region.
India has consistently demonstrated its role as a first responder and security partner in the region. Its assistance to Sri Lanka during the country’s economic crisis and humanitarian support following Cyclone Ditwah in 2025 reflected New Delhi’s enduring commitment to the security, stability and prosperity of its maritime neighbourhood.
The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to further consolidate bilateral defence engagement and advance cooperation in mutually beneficial areas, with particular focus on maritime security and defence cooperation.
The engagement also reinforces India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the vision of MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — aimed at strengthening partnerships and promoting a secure, stable and prosperous Indian Ocean Region.
The Defence Minister’s visit is expected to impart further momentum to the traditionally close and friendly India-Sri Lanka relationship and strengthen the two countries’ shared commitment towards regional security, maritime cooperation and defence preparedness.
