Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held bilateral talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie during his State Visit to the island nation, with both leaders agreeing to expand cooperation across key sectors, including health, education, digital transformation, maritime security and sustainable development.

The discussions, held at the State House in Victoria, Mahe, covered the full spectrum of India-Seychelles relations. The two leaders also reviewed regional and global developments, particularly challenges facing the Indian Ocean region such as illegal fishing, drug trafficking and piracy. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Seychelles’ development priorities and strengthening the longstanding bilateral partnership.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over the progress of projects implemented under India’s Special Economic Package for Seychelles. They also jointly unveiled a commemorative logo marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Following the talks, India and Seychelles exchanged several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements covering capacity building, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), health, agriculture, shipping, space cooperation, extradition and a Line of Credit worth ₹1,250 crore.

The two countries also announced new initiatives in food security, infrastructure, healthcare, vocational training, maritime security and defence to further support Seychelles’ development agenda.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi addressed an Extraordinary Sitting of the National Assembly of Seychelles, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. In his address, he highlighted the deep historical ties between the two countries and underscored their shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law and people-centric governance. He also called for stronger parliamentary exchanges while emphasizing cooperation in development, maritime security, technology, innovation, healthcare and capacity building.

During the visit, Seychelles’ Leader of the Opposition, Bernard Georges, also called on Prime Minister Modi. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the special friendship between India and Seychelles.

Prime Minister Modi is on a State Visit to Seychelles from June 27 to 29, aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
