The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) today showcased a series of iconic bridge projects built over the past twelve years, describing them as key milestones in India’s infrastructure-led growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the guidance of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
According to the ministry, these engineering marvels have significantly improved connectivity, reduced travel time, boosted economic activity and strengthened regional integration across the country.
Among the notable projects is the 1.49-km New Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Assam, which has eased traffic congestion and enhanced connectivity between North and South Guwahati along the NH-27 corridor.
In Rajasthan, the 1.4-km six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Chambal River at Kota stands out as the state’s first hanging bridge. Dedicated to the nation in 2017, the structure incorporates wildlife-friendly features, protecting the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary by avoiding construction piers within a critical stretch of the river.
Gujarat’s 1.34-km extradosed bridge over the Narmada River in Bharuch, opened in 2017, has improved traffic flow on the busy Ahmedabad-Mumbai section of NH-8 while contributing to regional economic development.
In Bihar, a 1.8-km six-lane extradosed bridge over the Ganga River on NH-31 has strengthened connectivity between North and South Bihar. Inaugurated in August 2025, the bridge was built parallel to the aging Rajendra Setu, reducing travel delays and supporting heavy vehicular movement.
The ministry also highlighted the 9.15-km Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, popularly known as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Built over the Lohit River, the bridge provides a crucial strategic and civilian link and is designed to withstand the movement of 60-tonne military tanks.
MoRTH said these projects reflect India’s growing engineering capabilities and commitment to creating world-class infrastructure that supports economic growth, national integration and inclusive development.
