The Ministry of Defence has signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for the procurement of BrahMos Fire Control Systems and launchers for Indian Navy warships, strengthening the maritime strike capabilities of the force.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on October 6 under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The acquisition is aimed at equipping Indian Navy ships with advanced BrahMos systems and further enhancing their ability to conduct precision maritime strike operations.
The project carries a minimum indigenous content of 68 per cent, reflecting the government’s focus on self-reliance and greater domestic participation in advanced defence manufacturing. It is also expected to provide employment opportunities over the next three years and create additional opportunities for Indian defence industries, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The BrahMos weapon system is deployed aboard several frontline Indian Navy warships and serves as the Navy’s principal Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) system for maritime strike missions.
Capable of engaging both land and sea-based targets, the supersonic missile system combines high speed with precision and extended-range engagement capability, providing frontline warships with a potent offensive capability.
The latest procurement is expected to further strengthen India’s maritime security architecture while supporting the ongoing effort to develop and induct advanced defence technologies with a greater indigenous footprint.
The contract also marks another step towards reducing dependence on foreign sources for critical military systems and expanding India’s domestic defence industrial base.
