The upcoming Ladakh Marathon has already attracted around 8,000 registrations, with participation expected from across India and overseas, officials said on Sunday as the Union Territory administration reviewed preparations for the region’s flagship sporting event.
Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra inspected arrangements at the NDS Indoor Stadium in Leh and described the growing response to the marathon as a significant achievement for Ladakh.
Kundra said the event has gained recognition beyond the region and offers Ladakh an opportunity to showcase its dramatic landscape, distinctive culture and reputation for endurance sports to an international audience.
Organisers informed the administration that approximately 8,000 runners have registered so far, with participants expected from different states and Union Territories as well as international destinations, an official spokesman said.
Focus on Local Participation:
Kundra urged residents, particularly young people, to participate enthusiastically and help turn the marathon into a major community event.
He said strong local participation would add greater vibrancy to the event while reinforcing Ladakh’s position as a destination for high-altitude sports, adventure and outdoor recreation.
The administration is also highlighting the Silk Route Ultra, a demanding 122-km endurance race that forms part of this year’s sporting programme.
122-Km Silk Route Ultra to Begin on September 10:
The ultra-marathon is scheduled to start on September 10 from Kyagar village in Nubra Valley and will trace sections of the historic Silk Route through Sumur, Lakjung, Tirith, Khalsar and Khardung before crossing the high-altitude Khardung La and finishing in Leh.
Kundra said the race captures the endurance and resilience associated with Ladakh while giving athletes and spectators an opportunity to experience the region’s challenging terrain and unique high-altitude environment.
He extended his best wishes to runners, organisers, volunteers and other stakeholders and called for close coordination to ensure the events are conducted smoothly and to a high standard.
The inspection reflects the UT administration’s broader push to use major sporting events to promote fitness, strengthen local participation, attract visitors and establish Ladakh as a prominent destination on the national and international high-altitude sports circuit, the spokesman said.
