Indian Navy warships INS Udaygiri and INS Kavaratti arrived at Nha Rong Port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on June 22 as part of their operational deployment to the Southeast Asia region, marking a significant step in strengthening maritime co-operation between the two countries.
INS Udaygiri, a stealth frigate, and INS Kavaratti, an anti-submarine warfare corvette, are both indigenously designed and built warships of the Indian Navy. The ships are part of the Eastern Fleet and are led by Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
Upon arrival, the ships received a ceremonial welcome from personnel of the Vietnam People’s Navy, representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, and port authorities. The reception underscored the longstanding friendship and growing strategic partnership between India and Vietnam.
During the port call, personnel from the Indian Navy and the Vietnam People’s Navy will participate in a range of professional engagements, including cross-deck visits, sporting events, community outreach programmes and bilateral interactions. Senior leadership meetings are also scheduled to discuss areas of mutual interest and further enhance naval cooperation.
The deployment represents the Indian Navy’s first major presence in Vietnam since India and Vietnam elevated their ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2026, reflecting the deepening defence and maritime engagement between the two nation.
