In a major step towards promoting sustainable textiles and showcasing India’s innovation in natural fibres, the Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games 2026 will wear specially developed jute-viscose blended apparel at the global sporting event in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The initiative has been undertaken by the National Jute Board (NJB) under the Ministry of Textiles to highlight the potential of jute as an eco-friendly and innovative textile solution. The apparel, made from 100 per cent biodegradable jute-viscose blended fabric, reflects India’s growing focus on sustainable manufacturing and value-added applications of natural fibres.

The official Kit Unveiling and Send-off Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026 Indian contingent was held in New Delhi on July 7. The event was attended by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, President of the Indian Olympic Association P. T. Usha, and other senior officials.

This marks the first time that jute-based apparel will be showcased at an international multi-sport event, providing global recognition to India’s jute sector, manufacturers, artisans and farmers associated with the industry.

The National Jute Board facilitated the development of the innovative fabric with support from Gloster Jute Mills, Kolkata. The apparel was designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, using the specially developed jute-viscose blended material.

Following the initial showcase during the National Jute Board Foundation Day celebrations in Patna on April 1, 2026, the NJB collaborated with the Indian Olympic Association to introduce the sustainable apparel for the Indian contingent.

The Commonwealth Games 2026 will feature athletes from 72 countries, with India represented by a 124-member contingent comprising 78 male and 46 female athletes.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the National Jute Board’s Jute Diversification Programme by creating new domestic and international market opportunities for sustainable jute products. It also supports India’s efforts to establish natural fibres as environmentally responsible alternatives in the global textile industry while providing encouragement to the country’s jute farmers.
