Dras, Ladakh :The Indian Army’s Forever in Operations Division Joint Mountain Terrain Bicycle Expedition 2026 culminated at the Kargil War Memorial, Dras, after successfully completing a gruelling 550-kilometre high-altitude ride across the challenging terrain of Ladakh. Organised as part of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas Commemorations, the expedition paid tribute to the valour and sacrifice of India’s Bravehearts while promoting the ideals of endurance, patriotism and national integration.
Flagged off from the Rezang La War Memorial on 10 June 2026, the expedition symbolically connected two of the nation’s most revered military memorials—Rezang La, honouring the legendary heroes of the 1962 Battle of Rezang La, and the Kargil War Memorial, commemorating the gallant soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.
The expedition team comprised one Officer, three JCOs, sixteen ORs, and five civilian cyclists from the Leh and Kargil districts. Over the course of the journey, the participants negotiated some of Ladakh’s most demanding mountain passes, including Chang La, Fotu La, and Hamboting La, traversing altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,000 feet. The ride tested the team’s physical endurance and mental resilience as they overcame steep gradients, harsh weather conditions and the challenges of high-altitude terrain through exceptional teamwork and determination.
Beyond its sporting and endurance objectives, the expedition served as an effective platform for community engagement and youth outreach. During the journey, the team conducted 22 outreach programmes across 17 Government schools, two colleges/universities and four monasteries, interacting with over 2,500 students, NCC cadets and youth across Ladakh. Through these engagements, the participants shared inspiring accounts of courage and sacrifice from the Kargil War while reinforcing the values of patriotism, national unity and selfless service.
A significant highlight of the expedition was an interaction with Shri Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport & Highways, at Thiksey Monastery, Leh.He commended the expedition as a fitting tribute to the nation’s Bravehearts and appreciated the team’s efforts in inspiring young people while reinforcing the spirit of ‘Nation First’.
The expedition team also interacted with Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena, Spiritual Leader and Founder President of the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC), Leh. The interaction acknowledged the organisation’s commendable contribution towards providing education, healthcare and opportunities for underprivileged children and orphans in the region.
