The Indian Army is set to operationalise its first Integrated Battle Groups (IBGs) under the Panagarh-based XVII Corps (Mountain Strike Corps), marking one of the most significant structural reforms undertaken by the force in recent years to enhance combat readiness along the northern borders.
According to defence sources, the first phase of the restructuring is expected to be implemented shortly, with the IBGs being raised from formations under the XVII Corps, which is tasked with offensive operations in the eastern sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The IBG concept is aimed at creating highly mobile, self-sustaining and mission-oriented combat formations capable of rapid deployment and independent operations. Unlike the traditional divisional structure, an IBG integrates all combat and combat support elements under a single commander, significantly reducing mobilisation time while enhancing operational flexibility.
As per the current restructuring plan, the XVII Corps is expected to field four Integrated Battle Groups along with a dedicated Fire Support Group. While the IBGs will be generated from the Corps’ existing formations, the Fire Support Group is likely to function directly under Corps Headquarters, providing concentrated long-range artillery support and precision strike capabilities. Newly inducted Divyastra artillery batteries are expected to form part of this fire support component.
Each IBG is expected to comprise more than 5,000 personnel and include infantry battalions, artillery regiments, armoured and mechanised elements where operationally required, Combat Engineers, Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Service Corps logistics units, signals, air defence, medical detachments and other combat support assets. The integrated structure enables the formation to undertake offensive and defensive operations without depending extensively on higher headquarters for immediate support.
Military planners believe the concept is particularly suited for high-altitude operations along the Himalayan frontier, where terrain and weather demand rapid force concentration and decentralised decision-making.
Instead of mobilising an entire corps, which may comprise tens of thousands of troops and require considerable time to deploy, an IBG can be inducted quickly to respond to emerging tactical situations.
The IBGs form part of the Army’s broader force modernisation and organisational restructuring initiative, which also includes the creation of Rudra Brigades, Bhairav Battalions, Divyastra Batteries and Shaktibaan long-range precision strike units. Together, these formations are intended to improve battlefield integration, firepower, surveillance and operational agility in future conflicts.
The concept of Integrated Battle Groups was first proposed during the tenure of former Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat as part of a comprehensive review of the Army’s force structure.
Extensive validation exercises were subsequently carried out, including trials by IX Corps on the western front and large-scale field exercises such as Exercise HimVijay in the eastern theatre.
Defence officials note that the restructuring is capability-driven rather than threat-specific and is designed to prepare the Army for multi-domain warfare, faster decision cycles and integrated operations across diverse theatres.
The move also aligns with evolving global military trends. China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), for instance, has over the past decade reorganised its traditional divisions into modular Combined Arms Brigades (CABs) capable of conducting integrated joint operations with armour, artillery, air defence, aviation and logistics under a unified command.
The operationalisation of the first IBGs is expected to lay the foundation for similar restructuring across other Army formations in the coming years and complement the proposed integrated theatre command structure currently under development.
