Disaster Management Exercise ‘Jal Aapda’ was conducted from 11–12 May 2026 jointly by the Indian Army, District Administration Tawang, SDRF and PMF to strengthen preparedness against rain triggered land/mud slides in Tawang Sector. Located on the extension of the Tibetan Plateau, with Nyamjang Chu and Tawang Chu as major rivers, the mountainous terrain remains highly vulnerable to sudden natural calamities.
A major focus of the exercise was the Dharali Mudslide incident in Uttarakhand, with detailed discussions on lessons learnt and their practical implementation in realistic flood and debris slide scenarios during the exercise. Live demonstrations by the Incident Response Team showcased coordinated rescue, evacuation and relief operations. The exercise reinforced inter-agency synergy, rapid response mechanisms and the Indian Army’s commitment towards effective disaster management and safeguarding lives in high altitude areas.
