Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared to counter any challenge, asserting that while adversaries continue to rely on proxy wars and infiltration, India’s military remains vigilant and capable of safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
Addressing troops during a commemorative event in Dras on the eve of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Singh paid tribute to the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War, describing their courage, determination and patriotism as a lasting source of inspiration for both the armed forces and the nation.
He said the resolve and dedication of Indian soldiers ensure that no adversary dares to threaten the country’s security, enabling citizens to live and pursue their aspirations without fear.
Interacting with troops during the traditional Barakhana, the Defence Minister noted that the security challenges facing India remain significant despite the victory in Kargil. He reiterated the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to the welfare of soldiers and said sustained efforts are being made to modernise the armed forces with advanced weaponry and training.
Singh also highlighted the military’s adoption of emerging technologies, stating that the professionalism and valour of Indian soldiers are recognised globally. Expressing confidence in India’s growing defence capabilities and self-reliance, he said the country’s armed forces are on course to become among the best in the world.
As part of the commemorative events, the Army organised Shaurya Bhoj at Vishwanathan Stadium in Dras, featuring displays of drones, robotic mules, Army martial arts demonstrations and cultural performances celebrating Ladakh’s heritage. The Defence Minister attended the event along with Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, serving personnel, Kargil War veterans, gallantry awardees, Veer Naris, families of fallen soldiers and civil dignitaries.
Earlier in the evening, Singh attended Shaurya Sandhya at the Kargil War Memorial, where patriotic performances, inter-faith prayers and the Beating Retreat ceremony were held in honour of the soldiers who participated in Operation Vijay. Ten families of Kargil War heroes were felicitated, and the Defence Minister lit ceremonial lamps at the memorial to pay homage to those who made the supreme sacrifice.
The day’s events began with Yudh Sansmaran at Lamochen View Point, where veterans, families of fallen soldiers and dignitaries watched a documentary and tribute film recounting the bravery of Operation Vijay. Family members shared memories of the soldiers during the programme.
The afternoon programme, titled Gauravmay Sanskriti, featured performances by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band, a motorcycle display by the Corps of Military Police’s Shwet Ashwa team, a national integration dance by students and demonstrations of the Indian Army’s use of advanced technologies in high-altitude operations.
The commemorations will conclude today with the Shradhanjali Samaroh, during which the Defence Minister will pay tribute to the heroes of Operation Vijay on behalf of the nation.
The Kargil War claimed the lives of 527 soldiers from Army whose sacrifices secured India’s victory and protected the nation’s territorial integrity.
