India will face Japan in a special T20 International on September 22 as part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The fixture will be jointly organised by the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), highlighting the growing sporting and cricketing ties between India and Japan.
The match comes during the 2026 Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. With India participating in the continental event, the T20I against Japan is expected to provide the Indian side with valuable match practice during the Games.
Beyond the sporting contest, the fixture is set to serve as a platform for strengthening cricketing relations between the two nations. Cricket has been steadily growing in popularity in Japan, with the JCA continuing efforts to expand the sport at both grassroots and competitive levels.
In a joint statement, the JCA and BCCI expressed their delight at staging the special T20I as part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations of India-Japan diplomatic relations.
“The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said.
“This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.”JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji also weighed in on the occasion and what it means for cricket in Japan.
“To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association,” he added.
