India’s hopes of securing a top-two finish in Pool D suffered a setback as the Indian men’s hockey team went down 2-4 to England in a fiercely contested FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 encounter at the Wagener Hockey Stadium today.
India produced an impressive fightback after falling behind early, taking a 2-1 lead through goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh. However, England responded with three second-half goals to turn the contest on its head and secure a crucial victory.
Nicholas Bandurak was the star for England, scoring twice, while Stuart Rushmere and Henry Croft added one goal apiece. The victory took England to six points from two matches and confirmed their place in the top two of Pool D.
India fight back after early setback:
The match began at a blistering pace, with both teams showing attacking intent from the opening minutes. India created the first major opportunity in the seventh minute when Jarmanpreet Singh found space inside the circle, but his effort went wide under pressure from England goalkeeper Oliver Payne.
England earned their first penalty corner in the 10th minute following a referral, but Manpreet Singh produced a superb stick block to keep out the dangerous flick.
England eventually broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. A perfectly executed aerial ball exposed a gap in the Indian defence, allowing Bandurak to finish clinically and put England 1-0 ahead.
India responded with greater attacking purpose and were rewarded early in the second quarter. Two minutes after the restart, Harmanpreet stepped up from a penalty corner and unleashed a powerful flick into the top-left corner, leaving Payne with no chance.
India then completed their turnaround in the 25th minute. Hardik Singh drove the ball along the baseline before finding Abhishek, whose bouncing pass across the face of goal was expertly redirected by Dilpreet to give India a 2-1 lead.
India went into the interval ahead and had enjoyed the stronger attacking numbers, registering eight shots on goal compared with England’s three.
England turn the game around:
England emerged after the break with greater control and began to put sustained pressure on the Indian defence.
The equaliser arrived in the 39th minute. A long slap-push from the right found Rushmere inside the circle, and his reverse-stick touch sent the ball past Mohith, making it 2-2.
England then completed their comeback in the 43rd minute. Another aerial ball created an opening in India’s defensive third, with Rushmere again involved in the move. Henry Croft reacted quickly and struck the ball past Mohith to score his maiden World Cup goal and put England 3-2 ahead.
India refused to surrender and continued searching for an equaliser. Jarmanpreet won a penalty corner in the 47th minute, but Harmanpreet’s attempt was kept out by an alert Thomas Sorsby.
Abhishek came close again in the 50th minute with a powerful tomahawk, but the ball flashed across the face of goal.
Bandurak seals England victory:
England put the result beyond doubt in the 55th minute. After India conceded a penalty corner following a goalmouth scramble, Bandurak stepped up and produced a superb low flick past Suraj Karkera to complete his brace and make it 4-2.
India pushed forward in the closing minutes but could not find a way back into the contest.
The defeat leaves India with three points from two matches and second in Pool D. England, meanwhile, sit comfortably at the top with six points and have secured a top-two finish.
India’s final pool match against Pakistan has now become a must-win encounter for Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates if they are to finish in the top two and keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. Pakistan and Wales currently have one point each from two matches.
