The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a 1-3 defeat to co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, leaving their hopes of reaching the semi-finals hanging by a thread.
The Netherlands moved to the top of Pool E with six points, having carried three points forward from the first stage. India, meanwhile, remain without a point and now face a must-win clash against Argentina in their next match.
India’s hopes could also depend on the result of England’s match against Argentina. A win for England would mathematically eliminate India from semi-final contention.
The match remained goalless for more than two quarters before the Netherlands finally broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive lapse to put the hosts ahead.
India had started brightly, pressing high and making early incursions into the Dutch circle. However, the Netherlands gradually took control of possession and created several opportunities. India defended well, with Sumit and Manpreet Singh making crucial blocks to deny penalty-corner specialist Jip Janssen.
India came closest to scoring in the first half through Dilpreet Singh, who was denied by the Dutch goalkeeper after finding space inside the circle.
The Indians earned their first penalty corner in the 35th minute following a successful video referral. Harmanpreet Singh’s initial flick was blocked, while his second attempt went wide.
The Netherlands doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Tjep Hoedemakers got a crucial touch on a precise cross from Koen Bijen to beat goalkeeper Mohith HS.
Harmanpreet gave India a lifeline shortly afterwards, converting a penalty corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However, the Netherlands responded almost immediately.
Four minutes later, Thijs van Dam finished a swift counter-attack after Manpreet Singh was dispossessed in midfield, restoring the Netherlands’ two-goal advantage.
India continued to push forward in search of another goal, but the Dutch defence remained organised and successfully managed the closing stages.
The 3-1 victory sent the Netherlands into the semi-finals, while India were left needing a win against Argentina and favourable results elsewhere to keep their campaign alive.
