Ryan Williams struck before half-time as India held 2026 FIFA World Cup side Panama to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Friday.
Williams put the Blue Tigers ahead in the 41st minute before Panama substitute Omar Valencia produced a stunning long-range finish in the 68th minute to level the contest.
India, ranked significantly below their Central American opponents, showed little sign of being overawed and matched Panama for long periods. The result also marked the first senior international meeting between the two sides.

Panama dominated possession in the opening stages, but India gradually grew into the contest and began creating the more threatening opportunities.
Williams was at the heart of India’s attacking moves, delivering a dangerous corner in the 15th minute before firing narrowly wide three minutes later. Ashique Kuruniyan also came close in the 26th minute when his effort found the side-netting.
The breakthrough arrived just before half-time. Akash Mishra sent a long ball behind the Panama defence after combining with Bijoy Varghese, and Williams timed his run perfectly. The forward controlled the ball under pressure before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Marcos de León Reyes to send the home crowd into celebration.
Panama responded aggressively after the break, making three changes and increasing the tempo. India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was called into action early, keeping out Giovany Herbert’s effort.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 68th minute when Valencia unleashed a dipping strike from outside the penalty area that flew into the top-right corner beyond Sandhu.

Panama pressed for a second goal and came close again, with a subsequent corner striking the woodwork. Sandhu also denied Carlos Harvey from distance, while Anwar Ali and Bijoy Varghese made crucial defensive interventions to keep India level.
India made changes of their own in the closing stages, including the return of Anirudh Thapa to international football after a two-year absence. The Blue Tigers continued to look for openings on the counter.
There was still time for one final chance in stoppage time when Sahal Abdul Samad released Manvir Singh, who was making his 50th appearance for India. However, the forward was crowded out before he could get a clean shot away.
India held on for a memorable draw against a World Cup-bound Panama side, earning a result that will add confidence ahead of their upcoming international friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay in Kolkata.
