India will face two-time world champions Uruguay at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday, October 6, in the final match of their three-game series against top-ranked World Cup opposition.
Under head coach Khalid Jamil, India drew 1-1 with Panama before suffering a 0-4 defeat to Brazil. Uruguay, ranked 20th in the world, present another demanding challenge, combining physical intensity with technical quality. Their squad includes Darwin Núñez, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ronald Araújo, José María Giménez and Lucas Torreira.
Jamil stressed the need for India to match Uruguay’s physical and tactical strength, while defender Akash Mishra insisted that the short recovery period after the Brazil game cannot be an excuse.
Uruguay will be without several key players, including Federico Valverde, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Sebastián Cáceres and Brian Rodríguez. Head coach Diego Forlán, who previously played for Mumbai City FC in the ISL, nevertheless warned his team against underestimating India after watching their performance against Brazil.
India’s only recognised senior international meeting with Uruguay came in 1982, when La Celeste won 3-1 at Eden Gardens.
With Panama offering belief and Brazil exposing the margins at the highest level, Uruguay provide India with one final opportunity to test their resilience, discipline and ability to compete against elite opposition.
“Two are done, one more to go, and we have to finish on a very, very good note,” Mishra said.
