India are back on top of South Asian women’s football after defeating defending champions Bangladesh 3-1 in the final of the SAFF Women’s Championship at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa today.The win marked India’s record-extending sixth title and their first since 2019, ending a seven-year wait for continental glory.
India struck first through Pyari Xaxa in the 42nd minute, but Bangladesh responded in first-half stoppage time when Ritu Porna Chakma levelled with a composed finish to make it 1-1 at the break.
The hosts came out flying after halftime. Just 40 seconds into the second half, Sanfida Nongrum restored India’s lead with a header from close range, swinging momentum firmly in favour of the Blue Tigresses.
Despite Bangladesh’s attempts to respond, India remained the more dangerous side. Goalkeeper Mile Akter produced key saves to keep her team in contention, but the pressure eventually told.
In the 82nd minute, substitute Lynda Kom Serto capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home India’s third and seal the result at 3-1.
India dominated the tournament overall, winning all four matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding just one. Sanfida Nongrum was named Player of the Tournament, while Aveka Singh finished as top scorer and Panthoi Chanu Elangbam earned Best Goalkeeper honours.
