India secured the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup title for the second time after defeating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in a commanding final performance in Auckland today.
Early goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo proved decisive as India capped off an unbeaten tournament campaign and earned promotion to the FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League for the upcoming season.
Navneet opened the scoring in the fourth minute, converting a penalty corner with a powerful strike after India’s first meaningful attack of the match. The visitors doubled their advantage just before the end of the opening quarter when Sunelita Toppo expertly deflected Deepika’s penalty-corner effort into the net in the 15th minute.
Despite New Zealand enjoying significant possession during the early stages, India’s disciplined defensive structure and swift transitions repeatedly troubled the hosts. The two-goal cushion allowed India to control the tempo of the contest and absorb pressure effectively.
New Zealand attempted to mount a comeback in the second half but found few openings against a resilient Indian defence. Goalkeeper Savita delivered a crucial save from a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter, preserving India’s lead and frustrating the home side’s efforts to reduce the deficit.
India continued to defend resolutely in the closing stages, maintaining their organisation and composure to secure a deserved 2-0 victory and lift the trophy.
Lalremsiami was named Player of the Match for her influential performance in the final, while Deepika finished as the tournament’s joint-leading scorer with six goals, sharing the honour with USA forward Ashley Sessa.
The title marks India’s second Women’s Nations Cup triumph, following their success in the inaugural edition in 2022.
India’s road to the championship was impressive. They opened the tournament with victories over the United States (3-2), Japan (2-1), and Uruguay (3-2) in Pool A before producing a dominant 6-0 win against Chile in the semi-finals. The final victory over New Zealand completed an unbeaten campaign and underlined the team’s growing stature on the international stage.
In recognition of the achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹300,000 for each player and ₹150,000 for each member of the support staff.
The triumph represents another significant milestone for Indian women’s hockey, reinforcing the team’s upward trajectory and securing its return to elite international competition through qualification for next season’s FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League.
