India and Slovakia today elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic ties as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during his visit to Bratislava.

Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the historic Bratislava Castle, where the two leaders met in both one-on-one and delegation-level formats to discuss a broad spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global issues.

The leaders described the upgrade in relations as the beginning of a new chapter built on shared democratic values and a longstanding friendship between the two nations.

Discussions covered trade and investment, defence and security, space cooperation, civil nuclear energy, renewable energy, digital innovation, academic exchanges, culture, and talent mobility. Both sides also explored opportunities for collaboration in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and other next-generation technologies.

During the talks, Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Slovakia’s support and solidarity following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025, underscoring the two countries’ shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.

The leaders also exchanged views on key regional and international developments, reaffirming their support for multilateralism and the reform of global governance institutions to better reflect contemporary realities.
A major focus of the discussions was the strengthening of India-European Union relations. Both leaders welcomed the positive outcomes of the recent India-EU Summit, including the successful conclusion of the landmark India-EU Free Trade Agreement and the adoption of a Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda aimed at deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.

Following the meeting, India and Slovakia exchanged several agreements and memoranda of understanding covering cooperation in digital technologies, labour migration, higher education and research, and audio-visual content creation. The two sides also exchanged a Letter of Intent to enhance defence cooperation.
In a notable initiative aimed at fostering technological collaboration, India announced the establishment of the first-ever Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice.

Prime Minister Fico later hosted a luncheon in honour of the visiting Indian leader. Prime Minister Modi also extended an invitation to his Slovak counterpart to visit India at a mutually convenient date.

The visit is expected to inject fresh momentum into India-Slovakia relations and broaden cooperation in strategic, economic, and technological domains amid an evolving global landscape.
