In a major boost to sports infrastructure in Ladakh, India’s highest Astro Turf Football Ground was inaugurated in Leh today at an altitude of 11,500 feet, marking a historic milestone for athletes in the Union Territory.
The upgraded Open Stadium was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena and now features a modern synthetic football turf, an eight-lane athletic track, and a newly constructed VIP stand. Developed at a cost of over ₹30 crore under the Khelo India scheme and the Special Development Package, the project is expected to significantly improve sporting opportunities for youth in the region.
For years, aspiring athletes from Leh and Kargil had limited access to professional sports infrastructure and often had to travel outside Ladakh for advanced training. Officials said the new facility would provide local players with world-class amenities within their own region and could also host national-level tournaments, training camps, and high-altitude endurance programmes in the future.
Experts believe Leh’s unique terrain and high-altitude conditions could attract professional teams and elite athletes seeking specialised conditioning and endurance training.
Residents and sports enthusiasts described the inauguration as a landmark moment for Ladakh’s youth, saying it would encourage more youngsters to pursue sports professionally and broaden career aspirations beyond traditional fields.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Saxena said, “For the first time, our youth now have access to international-level facilities within their own region. These world-class amenities will not only nurture discipline, confidence and a healthy lifestyle but also prepare athletes to compete nationally and internationally, while promoting sports tourism and economic growth.
“I express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji for his constant support to the development of Ladakh. Together, we are committed to empowering our youth, strengthening unity, and building a vibrant sporting culture that will bring laurels to Ladakh and the nation.”
Former Indian football captain and coach Shabbir Ali also welcomed the initiative.
“Great initiative indeed, golden opportunity for the young footballers of Ladakh. All I can say other states should take a lesson from UT Ladakh. If such infrastructure could build up at a remote terrain like Leh, then other parts of the country should also follow the example,” he said.
With snow-covered mountains surrounding the venue, the inauguration underscored Ladakh’s growing emergence as a hub for high-altitude sports and youth development.
