To commemorate World Environment Day 2026, Assam Rifles conducted extensive tree plantation, water conservation and environmental awareness campaigns across Manipur, aligning with the United Nations Environment Programme theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The initiative focused on combating climate change, preventing deforestation, conserving water sources and promoting sustainable development.
More than 18,900 indigenous and ecologically beneficial saplings were planted across the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Thoubal, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul, Kamjong and Churachandpur. The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from 3,432 Assam Rifles personnel and families, along with village leaders, local residents, NGOs, forest officials and school children.
The flagship plantation drive was held at the Assam Rifles Headquarters, Mantripukhri Garrison, where 500 saplings were planted by senior officials and personnel. Simultaneously, large-scale plantation activities were undertaken across frontier villages and garrisons, resulting in the plantation of thousands of fruit-bearing, shade-giving and indigenous trees. Environmental awareness programmes, painting competitions and interactive sessions were also organised in schools and community institutions to promote ecological responsibility among the youth.
Major plantation drives were conducted at New Keithalmanbi, Waroiching, Pallel, Tengnoupal, Moreh and Modi Garrisons, contributing significantly to the state’s green cover. At Moreh, local youth and members of the Adullam Rehabilitation Centre joined hands with Assam Rifles personnel, reflecting strong community participation.
In Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, joint initiatives with local communities and the Forest Department focused on afforestation, spring-source protection and groundwater recharge. Thousands of saplings, including Neem, Mango, Guava, Jackfruit, Orange and Silver Oak, were planted across multiple villages and border areas.
In Churachandpur district, coordinated plantation and awareness campaigns across headquarters, border villages and operational locations resulted in the plantation of 2,370 saplings. Interaction sessions on environmental conservation and sustainable resource management further strengthened public awareness.
Through these large-scale initiatives, Assam Rifles reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship, community welfare and sustainable development, while fostering strong civil-military cooperation in building a greener and more resilient Manipur.
