A restaurant in Glasgow has agreed to correct an inaccurate depiction of India’s map after Olympic boxer Lovlina Borgohain raised concerns over the omission of the Northeast during a visit with the Indian boxing contingent.
The issue came to light after members of the Indian sports contingent visited Mister Singh’s India following the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Borgohain noticed that the restaurant’s branding displayed a map of India without the Northeastern states and brought the matter to the attention of the management.
Speaking to the restaurant staff, the Assam-born boxer said the depiction was hurtful, particularly for people from the Northeast.
“Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our Northeast is missing. As someone from the Northeast, that really hurts us,” Borgohain said, while requesting the management to rectify the error.
The Indian Embassy in Scotland also took note of the matter and, in a statement, said it had immediately raised the issue with the restaurant. According to the embassy, the management assured officials that corrective measures were being taken and had already begun withdrawing items carrying the incorrect map.
Ajay Singh, who accompanied the Indian contingent, said there was no confrontation during the interaction. He stated that he and Borgohain simply pointed out the error, following which the restaurant acknowledged the mistake and agreed to make the necessary changes.
Responding after the incident drew attention on social media, the restaurant issued a public apology, saying the incorrect depiction of India’s map was unintentional and that it had never intended to offend anyone. It also announced that its logo would be updated to display the correct map of India.
The restaurant added that it was honoured to host the Indian contingent following its Commonwealth Games campaign and reaffirmed its commitment to correcting the design. Soon after issuing the statement, the restaurant’s Instagram page appeared to have been deactivated, displaying a message that the account was no longer available.
