Germany Retain Hockey World Cup Crown, Argentina Claim Historic Bronze

Germany retained the FIH Hockey World Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Spain in the final ,becoming the first men’s team to win consecutive World Cups on two separate occasions.

Michel Struthoff scored the decisive goal with 80 seconds remaining in the third quarter, capitalising on Germany’s only circle entry of the period. He ran across the face of goal and finished into an empty net after the Spanish goalkeeper committed early.

Spain had the better of the chances for long stretches, particularly in the second and third quarters, but Germany’s defence remained resolute. Goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg produced several important saves, including an outstanding glove stop to deny Borja Lacalle’s angled reverse-stick effort in the second quarter.

The match was goalless at half-time before Struthoff broke the deadlock. Spain continued to press in the final quarter and withdrew their goalkeeper with less than four minutes remaining, but Germany held firm to secure a fourth World Cup title.

Germany’s Christopher Rühr was named Player of the Match.
“Spain played a hell of a tournament. We always struggle against Spain,” Rühr said after the final. “They played a really good game today, and we had the luckier end.”

The Netherlands, meanwhile, were denied a place on the podium after Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 victory in the bronze-medal match.

Argentina took the lead in the 41st minute when Tomas Domene produced a deft one-handed deflection from a powerful strike from the 23-metre line.

The Netherlands levelled four minutes after Jorrit Croon received a 10-minute yellow card, with Jip Janssen finding Floris Middendorp from a penalty-corner variation in the 49th minute.

The Dutch thought they had taken the lead late in the match, but the goal was ruled out for danger. Argentina capitalised on the reprieve when veteran defender Matias Rey, 41, converted a penalty corner in the 59th minute to restore the lead.

The Netherlands removed their goalkeeper and earned a series of penalty corners in the closing stages, but Argentina survived the late onslaught to secure their second World Cup medal in history.

Tomas Ruiz was named Player of the Match as Argentina celebrated a landmark achievement, while the Netherlands missed out on a World Cup medal for the first time in 20 years.

Argentina’s bronze also marked only the second time the men’s team had reached the World Cup podium.
