In a vibrant celebration of football, culture and community spirit, the Blazing Sword Division under the aegis of Gajraj Corps of the Indian Army, in collaboration with Adhunik India Foundation, successfully concluded the 5th Freedom Fighter Jhagaru Gour Memorial Football Tournament at Monabari Tea Estate, Assam.
Dedicated to the memory of Jhagaru Gour, the legendary Adivasi freedom fighter associated with Orangajuli Tea Estate in Udalguri, the tournament has evolved into a significant platform celebrating the heritage, aspirations and sporting talent of Adivasi communities living across the tea estates of Assam.
The fifth edition witnessed participation from 16 teams, which competed in 15 high-intensity matches across various tea estate locations. After two weeks of keen competition, Behali Tea Estate and Mahalaxmi Tea Estate emerged as the finalists.
The grand finale on 16 August 2026 drew an enthusiastic gathering of more than 6,000 spectators from tea estates across Assam. In a closely fought and thrilling contest, Behali Tea Estate emerged victorious, securing the championship title for 2026.
The final was attended by Maj Gen Navtej Singh Sohal, SM, General Officer Commanding, 71 Infantry Division, as the Chief Guest. Traditional Adivasi cultural performances added colour and vibrancy to the occasion, enthralling the large gathering and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The winners and participating teams were felicitated with trophies, medals, certificates and attractive prize money. For several young players from tea estate communities, the recognition represented a significant achievement and an encouragement to pursue their sporting aspirations.
Beyond the football field, the tournament served as a platform for community engagement, empowerment and social cohesion. It provided Adivasi youth an opportunity to showcase their talent, build confidence and aspire to greater opportunities beyond the challenges of everyday life.
The region has also witnessed a significant transformation over the years. Areas that once faced the challenges of insurgency and the threat posed by groups such as the ULFA have gradually moved towards greater stability and normalcy. The sustained presence and outreach of the Indian Army, alongside the efforts of civil administration and local communities, have contributed to creating an environment where people can participate freely in community events, sports and cultural activities. The tournament symbolises this changing landscape, where the focus is increasingly on peace, opportunity, youth empowerment and development.
What began as a modest initiative in 2022 at Gorpara Ground, Dhekiajuli, has grown into a prominent sporting and community event. The Jhagaru Gour Memorial Football Tournament continues to keep alive the legacy of a freedom fighter while bringing together diverse communities through the shared language of sport and culture.
The successful conclusion of the fifth edition reaffirmed that football can be more than a game—it can become a powerful instrument of unity, confidence and aspiration, helping connect communities and inspire the next generation.
