The FIFA World Cup 2026™ captivated millions with unforgettable matches, record-breaking attendances and historic moments on the pitch. Behind the excitement, however, stood the largest operational undertaking ever seen in world football.
Spanning 39 days across three host nations, the expanded tournament was staged in 16 Host Cities, utilised 48 Team Base Camps and operated across 645 official venues. Nearly 300,000 accredited personnel supported the competition, while 1,248 players represented their nations in front of a cumulative stadium attendance exceeding 6.8 million fans.
What appeared to supporters as a seamless global celebration of football was powered by one of the most complex logistical operations in sporting history. From transporting teams and equipment across an entire continent to preparing world-class pitches, coordinating security, accreditation, transport, media services and fan operations, every aspect of the tournament was delivered on an unprecedented scale.
The success of the competition was made possible by more than 43,000 volunteers, 73,700 accredited security personnel and a FIFA workforce representing 104 nationalities. Security operations accounted for over one million shifts throughout the tournament, while accreditation systems recorded more than five million scans across official sites.
The tournament’s media and broadcast operation also reached new heights. The International Broadcast Centre in Dallas functioned as a fully operational media hub, hosting thousands of professionals and ensuring comprehensive global coverage of all 104 matches. Production teams deployed approximately 5,000 cameras and created more than 24,000 pieces of content, bringing every moment of the tournament to audiences around the world.
Inside the stadiums, fan consumption reflected the event’s extraordinary scale. Across the tournament, supporters purchased nearly 675,000 hot dogs, enough to stretch roughly 135 kilometres if placed end to end. More than 4.6 million soft drinks and bottled waters were consumed, alongside over 5.5 million beers during the 39-day competition.
Fan engagement extended well beyond the match venues. FIFA Fan Festivals™ attracted more than nine million visitors across North America, while FIFA’s Know Before You Go communications programme helped supporters navigate the tournament by distributing over 2,300 WhatsApp messages and 7.7 million emails.
One of the tournament’s defining moments came on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Spain lifted the FIFA World Cup Winner’s Trophy after defeating Argentina in the final, capping a historic edition of football’s premier competition.
FIFA has now released a comprehensive collection of statistics highlighting the immense scale, complexity and ambition behind the FIFA World Cup 2026™, offering an unprecedented look at the operational effort that powered the biggest sporting event in history.
