India has achieved another significant milestone in indigenous defence technology with the successful high-altitude trial of the Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS), designed and developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), DRDO.
The system was tested at Nyoma and Mudh Drop Zones, among the world’s highest-altitude drop zones, under extremely challenging environmental conditions.
A team of ADRDE test jumpers, including Wg Cdr Rahul Jha, Chief Test Jumper, MWO R J Singh, VM(G), and MWO Vivek Tiwari, conducted the operational jump from an altitude of 22,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL).
With temperatures falling to approximately −15°C, the trial provided a demanding environment to evaluate the performance and reliability of the complete system.
During the mission, the jumpers employed the indigenous MCPS along with its associated subsystems, including the indigenous para computer, oxygen system and specialised jumpsuits. The parachute was successfully deployed at 20,000 feet, followed by a safe landing at an altitude of approximately 13,700 feet.
Demonstrating High-Altitude Operational Capability:
The successful trial represents an important validation of MCPS under extreme high-altitude conditions. Such environments present unique challenges, including low temperatures, reduced oxygen availability, demanding atmospheric conditions and the need for precise parachute deployment and navigation.
The successful integration and performance of the indigenous subsystems demonstrate the growing maturity of India’s airborne and high-altitude defence technologies.

The MCPS trial is significant not only as a successful parachute test but also as an example of India’s expanding ability to develop complete, mission-ready systems domestically.

The trial has demonstrated the system’s efficacy, reliability and tactical employability in extreme high-altitude environments, strengthening the capabilities available to India’s airborne and specialised military forces.
With indigenous systems such as MCPS progressing through demanding operational trials, India continues to build a robust defence technology ecosystem capable of meeting the requirements of its armed forces across some of the world’s most challenging terrains and environments.
