BCCI, IOA at Odds Over Separate Accommodation for Indian Cricketers at Asian Games

A fresh disagreement has surfaced between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over accommodation arrangements for India’s men’s and women’s cricket teams at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The BCCI has expressed reservations about the accommodation available under the official Games arrangements and is considering separate facilities for the two cricket teams. The board is also expected to assess the accommodation and related facilities in Japan before taking a final decision.

The IOA, however, has maintained that the Indian cricketers will not be given preferential treatment over athletes from other disciplines. IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer has stressed that the association’s priority is to ensure the welfare and equal treatment of the entire Indian contingent, which will compete across 36 sports at the Games.

    IOA Stresses Equal Treatment:

The official Asian Games accommodation is intended to serve the Indian contingent as a whole, according to the IOA’s position. If the BCCI believes its players require alternative arrangements, the cricket board can make independent accommodation plans.

However, moving the teams outside the official Games accommodation would also place the responsibility for the additional logistics on the BCCI. This would include accommodation, meals, transportation and ensuring that players reach their respective competition venues on time.

The IOA’s stance reflects the principle of maintaining a common standard for athletes representing India at a multi-sport event.

    BCCI Weighs Player Requirements:

The BCCI’s concerns are likely to centre on the specific requirements of international cricketers, including preparation, comfort, security and match-day logistics. With the board possessing considerable financial and organisational resources, it could opt to arrange separate facilities if the official accommodation is deemed unsuitable.

Such a move, however, could raise questions over preferential treatment for cricket, particularly when athletes from 35 other disciplines will form part of the same Indian delegation.

    Decision Expected Before Games:

The accommodation issue is not expected to affect India’s participation in the Asian Games, but the two sides will need to settle the arrangements before the teams travel to Japan.

The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4, with cricket included in the programme.

For now, the IOA’s position remains clear: all athletes in the Indian contingent should receive equal treatment under the official arrangements. Should the BCCI choose to house its cricketers separately, the board will have to bear responsibility for the additional costs and logistics.
