The Assam Rifles on Tuesday paid tribute to three personnel who laid down their lives during the 1959 Longju incident, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held at the Unit Quarter Guard in Veng, Churachandpur district.
The ceremony, held on August 25, commemorated Naik (Late) Madaini Bahadur Chhetri, Rifleman (Late) Bati Anka and Rifleman (Late) Prem Bahadur Chhetri of 5 Assam Rifles, who were killed in action on the same day in 1959 during an unprovoked Chinese aggression at Longju in the Subansiri Division of the then North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), now Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The three personnel displayed exemplary courage, determination, loyalty and comradeship while facing the adversary, and their sacrifice continues to hold a significant place in the history and traditions of the Assam Rifles.
The proceedings began with the laying of wreaths and a Guard of Honour, followed by a motivational address highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen personnel.
A total of 215 Assam Rifles personnel participated in the ceremony and paid homage to the three bravehearts.
The event also sought to reinforce the force’s ethos of selfless service and devotion to duty, while inspiring personnel to uphold the highest traditions of the Assam Rifles.
The commemoration reaffirmed the enduring values of loyalty, courage and sacrifice that continue to guide the force in the discharge of its duties.
