In a significant operational success against insurgent networks in Manipur, Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Eastern Command and Spear Corps, in coordination with Manipur Police, apprehended SS Capt Balin alias Thiyam Boycha Singh, an active cadre of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), during a joint intelligence-based operation in Thoubal District.
The apprehension of the insurgent cadre marks a major breakthrough for security forces in their sustained efforts to dismantle underground networks operating in the state. The apprehended individual was carrying an NIA bounty of ₹4 lakh and is identified as a key accused in the 2021 Churachandpur ambush, in which Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his family members and security personnel were killed.
The successful operation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence gathering and close synergy between Assam Rifles and Manipur Police. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the security forces mounted a focused operation that resulted in the apprehension of the active insurgent cadre, delivering a significant blow to the operational ecosystem of the PLA in the region.
The 2021 ambush had targeted Colonel Viplav Tripathi and his family while they were travelling in Churachandpur district, along with members of the security detail. The incident was a grave attack on the security establishment and underscored the threat posed by insurgent formations operating in the state.
The latest apprehension is therefore significant not only from an operational perspective but also in the context of ongoing investigations into one of the major insurgent attacks in Manipur in recent years. During preliminary questioning, the apprehended cadre reportedly disclosed his involvement in PLA activities, including training and an extended stay at a PLA camp in Myanmar, procurement and movement of war-like stores, and links with other militant organisations.
Following the operation, the apprehended cadre was handed over to the Manipur Police at Lilong Police Station, Thoubal district, at 1820 hours for further legal proceedings.
