The fifth edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 commenced on Monday at the Foreign Training Node in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with approximately 120 personnel each from the Indian Army and Australian Army participating in the two-week exercise.
Scheduled from October 19 to November 1, the exercise aims to strengthen military co-operation, enhance interoperability and improve operational coordination between the two armies, with a focus on joint operations in island and coastal environments.
The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from the Garhwal Rifles, along with personnel from other arms and services, while the Australian Army is represented by troops from its 13 Brigade. The fourth edition of AUSTRAHIND was conducted at Irwin Barracks in Perth, Australia, from October 13 to 26, 2025.

Focus on Joint Operations in Coastal and Island Terrain:
The exercise is being conducted under the theme “Joint Sub-Conventional Operations in Island and Coastal Environment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate.” It seeks to develop a common understanding of operational tactics, techniques and procedures for conducting coordinated missions in challenging coastal and island terrain.
During the exercise, troops from both countries will undertake joint planning, tactical drills and combat-oriented training under realistic operational conditions, incorporating aerial and maritime dimensions.
Training activities will focus on surveillance and reconnaissance, coordinated operations in coastal and island environments, protection of vital installations and responses to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) contingencies. The exercise will also facilitate the exchange of professional expertise and best practices between the participating forces.
New Zealand Joins as Observer:
A notable feature of this edition is the participation of an observer delegation from New Zealand for the first time, adding a wider regional dimension to the exercise.
The engagement reflects the importance of military-to-military cooperation and professional exchanges among regional partners amid evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific.
Strengthening Indo-Pacific Defence Co-operation:
Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 is expected to further consolidate defence ties between India and Australia by building mutual trust, improving interoperability and strengthening the ability of their armed forces to operate together in complex environments.
The exercise also reinforces the two countries’ shared commitment to promoting peace, stability and security across the Indo-Pacific region.
