NFR Rolls Out Technology-Driven On-Board Services in Five Trains to Enhance Passenger Experience

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced technology-driven enhanced on-board services in five superfast train services, becoming the second zonal railway under Indian Railways to implement the initiative aimed at improving cleanliness, hygiene, passenger comfort and service accountability.

The initiative covers the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express (12552/12551), Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express (12518/12517), Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express (15946/15945), New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express (22233/22234) and New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express (22227/22228).

The enhanced services were introduced in the two Vande Bharat Express trains based at New Jalpaiguri on October 14, 2026, in the presence of senior railway officials. The Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express also adopted the services on the same day from its originating station at Kamakhya. The Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express and Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express had commenced operations with the enhanced facilities on October 10 and 11, respectively.

Technology at the core of improved passenger services:

Under the initiative, dedicated teams will undertake regular coach cleaning, AC window cleaning, improved washroom maintenance, efficient waste disposal and the timely distribution and collection of bed linen. Personnel will also monitor water availability and provide basic technical assistance to address service-related issues during journeys.

A key feature of the system is its focus on timely grievance redressal. Passenger complaints will be addressed within a target of two hours, while unresolved issues will be escalated to the concerned railway authorities for further action.

To strengthen oversight and accountability, NFR has integrated digital monitoring mechanisms, including geo-tagged verification of services, staff tracking and centralised monitoring. These measures are designed to improve transparency and enable railway authorities to monitor the delivery of on-board services more effectively.

The initiative also incorporates real-time passenger feedback, star ratings and artificial intelligence-based cleaning assessments. These tools will help evaluate service performance, identify shortcomings and support continuous improvements in housekeeping standards.

Focus on cleanliness, accountability and passenger satisfaction:

With growing emphasis on technology-enabled railway services, the initiative seeks to move beyond conventional housekeeping arrangements towards a more structured, measurable and responsive service delivery system.

By combining digital supervision with dedicated on-board personnel and a defined complaint-resolution target, NFR aims to ensure that cleanliness and passenger comfort receive consistent attention throughout the journey.

The rollout marks another step in NFR’s efforts to modernise passenger services through technology and improved operational monitoring. The railway zone aims to build on the initiative to maintain higher hygiene standards, strengthen accountability and deliver a cleaner, more comfortable and passenger-friendly travel experience.
