Defending champions India overcame an early challenge from the Islamic Republic of Iran to secure a 37-23 victory in their Group A women’s kabaddi match at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium on Wednesday, strengthening their push for a place in the Asian Games semifinals.
Iran made the stronger start, racing into an 8-4 lead and putting India’s defence under pressure. India responded through Pooja, whose super raid reduced the deficit before another decisive raid brought the scores level and shifted the momentum.
India then took control of the contest, finishing the first half 19-15 ahead. The defending champions maintained their intensity after the break, outscoring Iran 18-8 in the second half to seal a comfortable 37-23 win.
India’s scoring included seven bonus points and four All-Out points, while their defence also produced a Super Tackle in the second half. Iran collected six bonus points but struggled to maintain the pressure as India steadily extended their advantage.
India will conclude their Group A campaign against hosts Japan on September 24 at 4:15 p.m., with a semifinal place within reach.
