Defending champions India began their men’s kabaddi campaign at the 2026 Asian Games with a commanding 49-24 victory over hosts Japan in their opening Group A match at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium on Monday.
Led by captain Sunil Kumar, India dominated the opening half, racing to a 31-9 lead as Ashu Malik’s three-point Super Raid set the tone for a one-sided start. PKL stars Arjun Deshwal, Devank Dalal and Ayan Lohchab also played key roles as India kept the pressure firmly on the hosts.
India’s defence kept Japan’s raiders in check throughout the first half, with the defending champions inflicting three All-Outs while accumulating 24 points through successful dismissals. Japan managed only five touch points, with four bonus points helping them stay on the board.
Japan came out with greater purpose after the break and showed improved tactical discipline, using bonus points and quick hand touches to make the second half more competitive. The hosts outscored India 15-12 in the second period, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
India’s defence, however, remained composed when it mattered most, producing a fourth All-Out and executing a crucial Super Tackle while reduced in numbers to shut down Japan’s hopes of a comeback.
India’s attack accounted for 36 of their 49 points through direct dismissals, while Japan relied heavily on bonus points for a significant share of their total.
The emphatic victory gives India a winning start to their title defence as they look to continue their remarkable record in Asian Games kabaddi, having won eight gold medals in the last nine editions.
