IMBAX 2026: India and Myanmar Deepen Military Partnership Through Joint Training

The 5th edition of the India–Myanmar Bilateral Army Exercise (IMBAX 2026) commenced on 15 September 2026 at the Joint Training Node, Umroi, Meghalaya, bringing together the armed forces of the two neighbouring nations for a 14-day programme scheduled to continue until 28 September.

More than a conventional military exercise, IMBAX represents an important platform for strengthening mutual trust, enhancing operational interoperability and deepening military-to-military cooperation between India and Myanmar.

The exercise is designed to develop greater coordination between the participating contingents through joint training focused on the conduct of operations under a United Nations mandate. By training together, the two armies gain valuable opportunities to understand each other’s operational procedures, tactical approaches and professional practices—capabilities that can contribute to more effective cooperation in multinational peacekeeping environments.

A key dimension of IMBAX 2026 is the exchange of operational experience and best practices. Such interaction allows personnel from both sides to learn from one another while developing a stronger appreciation of the challenges involved in contemporary military operations. Beyond tactical proficiency, the exercise fosters communication, confidence and mutual understanding at the individual and institutional levels.

The setting at Umroi further adds significance to the engagement. Conducting joint training in a realistic environment enables troops to build familiarity with coordinated procedures while strengthening the professional bonds that underpin successful military cooperation.

IMBAX 2026 will also provide the Myanmar contingent an opportunity to witness a range of indigenous weapons and equipment employed by the Indian Army, reflecting India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence capabilities under the vision of #JAIseVIJAY. The interaction provides an avenue for professional exposure and knowledge exchange while highlighting India’s evolving domestic defence ecosystem.

At its core, however, the exercise is about people: soldiers from two neighbouring countries training alongside one another, exchanging experiences and building relationships based on professionalism and mutual respect.

Such engagements contribute to a broader environment of trust, cooperation and regional stability. Through sustained military-to-military interaction, India and Myanmar continue to create avenues for greater understanding and closer institutional cooperation.

The 5th edition of IMBAX therefore carries significance beyond the training ground. It underscores the shared commitment of both nations to peace, stability and security, while reinforcing the importance of cooperation and constructive engagement in the region.

IMBAX 2026 stands as another step towards stronger military ties, greater interoperability and deeper mutual understanding between India and Myanmar.
