The five-day Leh Literature Festival 2026 concluded successfully at the NDS Memorial Sports Complex in Leh on Saturday, bringing together authors, scholars, military leaders, veterans, students and citizens for a vibrant celebration of books, ideas, history and Ladakhi culture.
Organised by the National Book Trust (NBT), India, under the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army, the festival featured a diverse programme of literary discussions, cultural performances, youth activities and exhibitions.
The Indian Army’s theme for the festival was “Indian Military History: Valour and Wisdom”, with a series of discussions exploring India’s military heritage, leadership and lessons from history.
Military History Takes Centre Stage:
Over the five days, the festival featured engaging sessions on military history and national security, with participation from distinguished speakers including Lieutenant General Satish Dua (Retd.), Lieutenant General Devendra Pratap Pandey (Retd.) and Colonel Ajay Raina, SM (Retd.), along with other defence and civil experts.
The discussions provided audiences with insights into India’s military history while encouraging wider conversations on leadership, courage, strategy and national service.
Platform for Ladakhi Culture and Youth:
Beyond literature and military history, the festival provided a vibrant platform for showcasing Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage and encouraging young people to engage with books and the arts.
A book fair and daily activities for children included creative writing, storytelling, art, theatre and other workshops. Cultural performances by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band, Dashugs Band, Stenzin Shayan Star and the Ladakh Cultural & Traditional Society added to the festive atmosphere.
The Ladakh Theatre Organisation also staged “Life & Legacy of Late Tashi Rabgias”, paying tribute to the renowned figure associated with Ladakhi literature and culture.
Army Showcases Military Equipment:
A major attraction of the festival was the Weapons and Equipment Display organised by the Indian Army, showcasing a range of modern military equipment and capabilities.
The exhibition gave students and members of the public an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to military equipment and understand the operational capabilities of the armed forces. It also sought to inspire young men and women to consider careers in the Armed Forces and contribute to nation-building.
Books Reach Remote Schools:
In another community-focused initiative, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the National Book Trust, distributed books to school libraries in remote villages across Ladakh, with the aim of encouraging a stronger reading culture among children.
The initiative extended the festival’s literary outreach beyond Leh and into some of the region’s more remote communities.
As the festival concluded, the Indian Army expressed its appreciation to the National Book Trust, participating speakers, artists, cultural organisations and the people of Leh for their enthusiastic support and participation.
The Leh Literature Festival 2026 reaffirmed the importance of literature, education, cultural preservation and community engagement in Ladakh, while bringing together the civil and military communities on a common platform. The festival is expected to become a regular feature of the region’s cultural calendar.
