India will commemorate the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, paying tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay and celebrating the Armed Forces’ victory in the 1999 Kargil War.

Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the successful conclusion of Operation Vijay, during which the Indian Armed Forces recaptured strategic heights in the Kargil sector after Pakistani intruders occupied positions along the Line of Control. Following over two months of intense fighting in high-altitude terrain, Indian troops restored control over all occupied posts without crossing the Line of Control.

The conflict remains a defining chapter in India’s military history, symbolising courage, sacrifice and national resolve. The operation also led to significant reforms in India’s defence preparedness, including enhanced jointness among the three Services, modernisation of military capabilities and a renewed emphasis on indigenous defence production.

The government highlighted that India has since undertaken wide-ranging defence reforms, including the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff and the Department of Military Affairs, increased defence spending, expansion of domestic defence manufacturing, and growth in defence exports under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The induction of advanced military platforms such as INS Vikrant, Rafale fighter aircraft, Apache and Chinook helicopters, BrahMos cruise missiles and indigenous armoured systems, alongside investments in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, hypersonic systems, missile defence and drone warfare.

Commemorative events are being organised across the country to honour the Bravehearts of Kargil. These include the Shaurya Vijay Yatra, motorcycle expeditions, treks to key battle sites, veterans’ visits to the Kargil War Memorial and military equipment displays, aimed at preserving the legacy of Operation Vijay and inspiring future generations.

The government said the enduring legacy of Kargil continues to strengthen India’s military preparedness while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
