A Mini Ratna Category-I Defence PSU under the Department of Defence Production, has launched its indigenous ‘GARUD’ High Resolution Binoculars for the civil market. Developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, a unit of the PSU, the product reflects the spirit of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ through indigenous design and manufacturing.

Drawing on its legacy of precision optical manufacturing since 1943, the PSU has combined defence-grade expertise with modern technology in GARUD. The binoculars offer 8x magnification and a wide 7.6-degree field of view, along with ±5 diopter adjustment, soft-touch eyecups and an ergonomic grip. Its weather-resistant construction enables dependable performance in varied outdoor conditions.

Weighing around 610 grams, GARUD is designed for portability and versatile use in birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature exploration, travel, sports, forestry, marine activities and security applications. The binocular platform has also served the Defence Forces and Central Armed Police Forces in demanding operational environments.

The launch marks the PSU’s entry into the civilian optics market, making indigenous defence optical capabilities accessible to a wider range of users. The product was launched on August 13, 2026, at DPSU Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Joint Secretary (Land Systems) Dr Garima Bhagat and senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Central Armed Police Forces and wildlife organisations, besides members of the company’s Board and senior officers.
