Reaffirming its commitment to community development and educational empowerment in remote border regions, the Indian Army has successfully completed the upgradation of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Hostel at Taryang Primary School in Lower Dzongu, North Sikkim, under the aegis of Operation Sadbhavana.

The initiative is aimed at improving the quality of life and educational opportunities for children belonging to remote Lepcha villages, many of whom face significant challenges due to difficult terrain, harsh climatic conditions, limited connectivity and inadequate infrastructure.

Established in 1976, Taryang Primary School has served as an important educational institution for the region. The hostel attached to the school accommodates approximately 35 students and plays a vital role in ensuring access to education for children from distant settlements. However, the facility had been operating with limited amenities, affecting the overall residential and learning experience of its young occupants.

Recognising these challenges, the Indian Army undertook a comprehensive infrastructure enhancement project to create a safer, healthier and more conducive environment for students. The upgraded hostel now features improved sanitation facilities, a hygienic kitchen and dining area, enhanced electrification, modern furniture, digital learning resources, sports and recreational infrastructure, and safety chain-link fencing around the school premises.

Speaking on the occasion, an Army official highlighted the significance of the project, stating that the Indian Army remains committed to supporting the aspirations of local communities and fostering sustainable development in remote areas. The official emphasised that providing children with a secure and enabling environment is essential for nurturing future generations and unlocking their full potential.

“The bond between the Indian Army and the people of Sikkim is built on trust, respect and shared commitment to the region’s progress. Through this project, the Army has endeavoured to provide children from remote villages a safe, healthy and enabling environment to learn, grow and realise their potential.”-The Army Officer said.

The transformation of the hostel is expected to significantly improve the living conditions of resident students while supporting their academic growth, physical well-being and overall development. By addressing critical infrastructure gaps, the project will help create a more supportive educational ecosystem for children from far-flung villages of North Sikkim.

The initiative stands as another example of the Indian Army’s people-centric approach under Operation Sadbhavana, which continues to promote education, healthcare, skill development and community welfare across remote and border areas of the country.

Beyond infrastructure development, the project has strengthened the longstanding bond of trust and cooperation between the Indian Army and the people of Sikkim. For the students of Taryang Primary School, the upgraded hostel represents not just improved facilities, but a brighter future filled with greater opportunities, safety and hope.
