The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully conducted Exercise ROTOR CLAP III, a specialised helicopter exercise themed “Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (Counter-UAS)”, in the deserts of Rajasthan to validate operational concepts and enhance its capability to counter the growing threat posed by hostile unmanned aerial systems.
The exercise brought together multiple helicopter units of the Indian Air Force in a realistic operational environment, focusing on developing and refining tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) for detecting, tracking and neutralising emerging aerial threats in the battlespace.
With unmanned aerial systems increasingly being employed in modern conflicts for surveillance, intelligence gathering and precision strikes, the exercise assumed added significance in strengthening the IAF’s preparedness against evolving asymmetric threats. Recent conflicts across the world have highlighted the expanding role of drones in military operations, underlining the need for integrated counter-UAS capabilities across all domains.
Exercise ROTOR CLAP III provided an opportunity for helicopter crews to operate in complex tactical scenarios designed to simulate drone incursions and other low-altitude aerial threats. Aircrew practised coordinated missions involving surveillance, rapid response, target acquisition and joint tactical manoeuvres aimed at protecting critical military assets and maintaining airspace security.
The exercise also focused on validating operational concepts for employing helicopters as part of a layered air defence architecture. By integrating rotary-wing assets into counter-drone operations, the IAF sought to improve response times, enhance situational awareness and strengthen interoperability among helicopter units during dynamic battlefield conditions.
Conducted in Rajasthan’s expansive desert terrain, the exercise offered conditions closely resembling operational environments where helicopter units may be required to undertake sustained missions under challenging weather and terrain conditions. The region’s vast open spaces enabled realistic training involving low-level flying, rapid deployment and coordinated mission execution.
Military planners also used the exercise to assess mission planning, command and control mechanisms, communication networks and operational coordination among participating units. Lessons drawn from the exercise are expected to contribute to the further refinement of the IAF’s doctrine for countering unmanned aerial threats and enhancing the effectiveness of rotary-wing operations in future conflict scenarios.
The exercise reflects the Indian Air Force’s continued emphasis on adapting to the changing character of warfare, where unmanned systems are increasingly influencing tactical and operational outcomes. By regularly conducting such specialised exercises, the IAF aims to ensure that its helicopter fleet remains capable of responding swiftly and effectively to both conventional and emerging threats.
