Assam Rifles, one of the oldest and most prestigious paramilitary forces in India, celebrated its 191st Raising Day on 24 March 2026 with great pride and solemnity at its headquarters in Shillong. This significant milestone marks nearly two centuries of dedicated service, valour, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders.
On the occasion, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, along with all ranks of the Force, paid homage at the War Memorial in Shillong to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Addressing the personnel, the Director General commended all ranks for their outstanding contributions in counter-insurgency operations in the North East and Jammu & Kashmir.
The Force has continued to demonstrate exceptional operational excellence during 2025–26. In recognition of their exemplary performance, three battalions of Assam Rifles were awarded the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation, while four battalions received the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation. Notably, 8 Assam Rifles was conferred the prestigious title of ‘Bravest of the Brave’ on Army Day 2026.
Further adding to its achievements, Assam Rifles personnel were honoured with several gallantry and service awards on Republic Day 2026, including one Kirti Chakra, four Shaurya Chakras, one Vishisht Seva Medal, and twelve Sena Medals.
Assam Rifles remains steadfast in its commitment to modernization through the induction of state-of-the-art weapons, surveillance systems, and protective equipment. With a continued focus on enhancing operational capability, the Force stands as a pillar of security and stability in the North East region.
As the region progresses towards greater development and prosperity, Assam Rifles continues to foster a sense of trust and security among the local population. Upholding its motto as the ‘Sentinels of the North East,’ the Force remains prepared to meet emerging challenges with resilience and dedication.
ORIGIN OF ASSAM RIFLES AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION:
The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of India, dating back to 1835 under the British Raj, raised under the name Cachar Levy. The present name of “Assam Rifles” has been used since 1917.Over the course of its history, the Assam Rifles have served in a number of roles, conflicts and theatres including World War I , where they served in Europe and the Middle East, and World War II, where they served mainly in Burma.After the Chinese annexation of Tibet, the Assam Rifles were tasked with manning the Tibet border of Assam Himalayan region.They were also instrumental in maintaining law and order in the tribal are of Arunachal Pradesh.
It contributed significantly in opening up the northeastern region in its administration and commerce. It thus came to be known as the ‘Right arm of the civil and left arm of the military.
